Diving last weekend

Big thank you to Seamus for organising the diving last weekend. We got the boat out on Sunday and everyone got a dive in Ballymacus in Oysterhaven bay, including some trainees for their first dives! Hopefully we'll get good weather some weekend soon and can get out and dive the Soverigns - Miriam badly needs some 20M dives!!

Kilkee weekend coming up Easter weekend, Randal is organising. Note the list of dive weekends for the summer is to be found by scrolling down on this page.

And there's some beer & bbq this week [weather dependent]. We're cleaning out and organising the cage at 6pm Thursday April 2nd. Please let Ray know if you can come along so we have enough food.

What you need to do before you can dive this year

Guys, Diving season is fast approaching so here's a reminder of what you need to do before you can get diving this year. Try to get this out of the way early so you don't end up unable to dive when you want to :

You must be a fully paid up club and CFT member, with the following 3 items showing green in your CFT account: 1. Self declaration of fitness to dive. 2. Annual water fitness test that you can do with any instructor or DO [Seamus or Ray]. Details are on this webpage, scroll down a few posts to find them, the test is not difficult. Amy or Ray can log in to CFT and sign you off once it's completed. 3. Medical up to date. If your medical is not showing green, please let me know when you completed your most recent CFT medical [the medical form is on our website]. Again, Amy or Ray can log in to CFT and sign you off. If you have not received a password to access your CFT account, let Ray know.

You may not have received the email below from Seamus [jb10@student.cs.ucc.ie] last week. We're hoping to have lots of instructors 28/29 March, so it's a good opportunity to get your trainee dives out of the way. Once you've completed your first 5 dives and have all the trainee lectures done you're a qualified trainee diver!! You can then go diving with other club members without an instructor You all want to get to that point as soon as you possibly can to start really enjoying diving!! Once you have your medical completed and log book stamped by a doctor, send Ra...

Diving Sunday 29 March

Attention trainees! We're trying to organise instructors for the weekend of 28/29 March. It's likely that we'll only be able to get instructors for the Sunday. Clear your schedule and watch this space: the diving season is upon us and you want to get certified ASAP.

If you haven't already done your medical, you need to get cracking on it. You need to print out this form and take it along to your GP (or, in a pinch, a GP).

For DAN members

DAN Europe would like to inform you that we are fully aware of recent communications and internet postings regarding the provision of hyperbaric chamber facilities available in Ireland to divers. We therefore feel that it is appropriate and necessary to release a statement directly to our members in order to dispel any confusion and uneasiness that this may have caused.

We would like to assure you that as a member of DAN Europe, in all cases of a diving emergency requiring recompression, that treatment will be arranged at an appropriate medical facility for the condition presenting. Also, that if required, evacuation to a recompression facility in the UK would be provided without question.

We hope that this clarifies DAN Europe’s position on this matter and that you are assured that the best possible treatment is available to you should you require it.

Safe diving for 2009. Yours sincerely DAN Europe

Cork SAC training plan

Here's the Cork SAC training schedule (download: pdf) for anyone who needs to catch up on the lectures.

The lectures are on at the NMCI. Dave Riordan from Cork SAC can give a lift from Gaol Cross to anyone who wants to attend. Please email Ray to arrange this if you need a lift or want to get the exact lecture times.

seamus, Thursday 13 November 2008

Lecture and party dates

Dates for the rest of the 2008 lectures are now up on the documents page. PDF files will follow shortly.

On 2 December the pool session will go ahead, but there'll be no lectures.

Scuba training at NMCI is scheduled for Saturday 6 December, so keep that date free too.

Most importantly, the SAC Christmas party is on Tuesday 9 December. Venues are TBC, but if Randal can get us a deal (ta, Randal) it'll probably be Costigan's and the Classic. This is a great opportunity to get to see the normally rather prim club letting its collective hair down.

CFT rules

Here are the five (count them!) CFT rules alluded to in the last post, separated from the rest for ease of reference. Thanks to Ray for the information.

  1. The minimum age for SCUBA training is fourteen years.
  2. All divers must undergo a diving medical examination as directed by the Medical Commission and set out in the C.F.T. Medical Form CFT 409.
  3. A life jacket, which may be an A.B.L.J., B.C. or Stab Jacket, must be worn on all SCUBA dives.
  4. Divers may only dive with qualified divers as described in CFT 413.
  5. All divers must have an Alternative Air Source. An Alternative Air Source is interpreted here as one of the following (in order of preference):
    1. an independent air supply and regulator,
    2. an octopus regulator,
    3. an Air2 (or similar),...

Octopuses, CFT rules, and Baltimore weekend

Hi all,

The CFT rules have changed and now require all divers to have an alternative air source. No one is to dive in future without an alternative air source.

Most of you with personal gear already have an octopus, so no worries. The club regs which do not comply with this will not be used until Octo's are fitted to them. We'll make an order soon, so if you need to buy an octo for personal gear let me know, might be cheaper than buying it yourself separately.

There are only 5 rules in CFT by the way. Everything else is a recommendation that may only be deviated from in exceptional circumstances.

If anyone has missed any lectures for Trainee or Club diver they are welcome to catch up by attending Cork Sub Aqua Club [CSAC] lectures - see the attachment for their schedule [we're welcome for the lectures only, not pool work]. I THINK they're on in NMCI, I'm confirming this at the moment...

Notes for lecture 2

The lectures for week 2 are up. Try to spot Ray's deliberate mistake regarding wetsuit buoyancy volume! Next week's lectures will be in Brookfield, room 101 (Google Maps, with directions from outside the library). Please be there for 7.30.

seamus, Thursday 16 October 2008

Lectures have started

The next lecture is on Tuesday 14 October in room G.19 on the ground floor of the Kane (science) building at 8.00. (see it in Google Maps) Ray and James will be talking about SCUBA equipment, underwater hand signals, and buoyancy, and Brian will be there from 7.30 on to collect your €100 deposit, if you haven't paid up yet.

After the lecture you'll be heading down to the Mardyke Arena for the first pool session, so make sure to bring a swimming costume, swim cap and towel (or you'll be wet and cold on the way home).

If you missed this week's lecture, you can Read the rest of this article

Temporary site up

This is just a quick hack I put together this evening. Everything will start looking less direly corporate as soon as I manage to draw two consecutive breaths without freaking out about my project, lab demos, grant money and the price of petrol.

I'll port more of the functionality over from the old site during the weekend, but for now, everything from the old site is available from the same place: here.
